Full-Time Faculty, Senior Studio 

Job Summary:

Otis College of Art and Design is accepting applications for a full-time faculty appointment in the Fashion Design program. This position is responsible for teaching studio courses at the senior level. The position reports to the Chair of Fashion Design. 

Otis offers competitive compensation and benefits. Initial placement in rank is recommended by the Search Committee and requires review and approval of the Chair of the Rank & Promotion Committee and the Provost. The College does not grant faculty tenure; this is a renewable full-time faculty appointment subject to annual renewal based on a performance review. 

Department Information:

Otis’Fashion Design program provides students with rigorous learning experiences developing and editing ideas that address specific design challenges. Students become educated and practiced in all aspects of the design process as they work with current designers and expert faculty. The Fashion Design department teaches students the technical, theoretical, professional, and personal skills necessary to sustain oneself in the field of fashion design.

•Hold a full-time studio contact hour load and teach a minimum of 18 contact hours per week.

•Provide a minimum of 6 hours on average per week in service to the department and the College as assigned by the Chair (i.e., serving on college-wide committees, attending faculty meetings, working department lab hours, participating in shared-governance of the Fashion Design department.)

•Mentor students in assigned classes including student advisement.

•Provide guidance and direction to teaching assistants and part-time faculty. Schedule, assign, and prioritize workloads. Set appropriate deadlines. Monitor classroom studios.

•Develop curricular materials and course syllabi.

•Participate in classroom set-ups.

•Participate in administrative duties such as writing syllabi, developing curricular materials, monitoring student attendance, documenting student learning, detailing program assessment, and submitting grades in a timely manner.  

•Enhance the visibility of the department through on- and off-campus events.

•Other duties as assigned by the Chair.


Minimum Qualifications:

•10-15 years of industry experience as a first through production pattern maker is required. BFA in Design or a related field is preferred.

•Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

•Demonstrated administrative leadership skills successfully managing an academic and/or industry related program is required.  

•Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in the field of fashion. Must be able to teach at the Senior Studio, designer level from production pattern making to costume design to tailoring, etc. Knowledge of fine tailoring is an asset. 

•Must be able to analyze advanced fashion illustrations (and/or flats) based on extensive knowledge of flat pattern drafting, draping, and garment construction.

•Must have an understanding of designer-level fashion sportswear, dresses, evening wear, couture fabrics, and their applications.

•Professional standing as a professional in the fashion community.

•Must be able to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional designers/artists/educators.
